Western Skies

Easdale Island, Firth of Lorne

Easdale can be a pretty challenging place to photograph well, the structure on the island doesn’t always translate to two dimensions. Catching a nice sunset can also be difficult, due to the winds rolling in off the Atlantic ocean and microclimates around the mountainous shores of Mull making for unpredictable weather and cloud patterns. Sunsets here are just as likely to fizzle out than pop off, and have a bad habit of sneaking up on you when they are least expected. I had a good feeling about this day though, and had headed out early to some locations I’d been scouting out the previous day. Conditions just kept getting more and more promising as the sun went down, as I was thrilled when the sky erupted into red and blue shades. It turned out to be the best sunset I’d experienced there. I’ve really tried to distill this shot down to the essential components… the quarry wall, the shark tooth like rocks bordering the ocean, with the glass like reflection in the quarry, and skies that reach for miles.
